I am an inspired Ad Man. Fresh off the American Association of Advertising Agencies Transformation Conference in Miami last week I got to see some of what makes our industry so compelling.
I got to hear from icons of the industry, Maurice Levy Chairman of Publicis, Martin Sorrell CEO of WPP, Carolyn Everson VP Global Marketing Facebook and Jeff Goodby, Co-Chariman of Goodby Silverstein.
There is a lot that makes our business great but it is the power of our ideas that really separates us from consultants, ad tech and other business building tools. As agencies we need become better at making good stuff faster and recognize that we are now in the content business. The demand for creativity has never been higher but if the work I saw at the conference is any evidence, we are rising to the challenge as an industry.
One of the pieces of work presented was the BBDO campaign for M&M’s 75th Anniversary. The ad is a celebration not only of one of America’s most beloved brands, but it is a mash up of old and new creative in a brilliantly inspired performance by Zeed and Aloe Blacc. Reprising Sammy Davis Jr.’s famous Candyman song with vintage M&M commercials. This spot captures how rich our advertising history is and how inspiring great advertising can be.
It doesn’t feel like a commercial and at 3:20 seconds it kept my attention all the way through.
